Learn how to safely isolate electrical supplies and improve your electrical safety knowledge in our Stevenage Training Centre.

This one-day training course is designed for tradespeople, maintenance staff and anyone who needs to understand electrical safety and safe isolation as part of their role. Combining classroom theory with practical training, the course provides the knowledge and skills required to safely isolate electrical circuits, use basic test equipment and understand the limitations of electrical work.

*Please note that this course does not qualify you as an electrician and is designed to support safe working practices when carrying out electrical tasks.

Course Details

During the course, learners will benefit from a combination of classroom learning and practical exercises, developing confidence in safe isolation procedures, electrical safety and the use of basic test equipment. The course covers essential electrical safety principles and handyman electrical tasks, helping learners understand how to work safely around electrical systems.

  • Basic electrical theory
  • Electrical shock
  • Overview of current and resistance
  • Earthing and why it’s important
  • Different types of circuit board (240V and 415V)
  • Circuit identification
  • Fuses, circuit breakers, and MCBs
  • Lighting and power circuits
  • Safe working practices
  • Safe isolation
  • Test equipment
  • How to wire/change a plug
  • Replacing socket outlets and fused spur units
  • Working with light fittings
  • Replacing tubes, bulbs, and starters
  • Ladder and step-ladder safety
  • Limitations of electrical work

Duration: 1 Day

Assessment: Learners will complete a practical assessment and a multiple-choice written assessment (30 questions) at the end of the course.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a PASS Certificate of Competence.

Course Suitability

Prerequisites: No formal qualifications are required, but some experience in a maintenance, facilities or trade-based role would be advantageous. Candidates should also have a reasonable level of written and spoken English.

Learners are encouraged to familiarise themselves with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations and relevant electrical safety guidance before attending.
