Entry Requirements
Any individual applying for this course should have prior electrical experience in a marine environment; or have completed a mandatory 12 months sea time as an EOOW; or Part of an initial electro-technical training programme.

Course Overview

Our 5 day course which has been fully accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) aims to provide seafarers responsible for the on-board safe control and management of high voltage power systems with the knowledge and training to do so safely and effectively. Our training directly aligns with the requirements outlined in Table A-III/2 STWC, 2010.

Course Content

The following elements are covered as part of this course:

  • Electrical hazards and precautions
  • UK and International Marine Health and Safety Regulations
  • Arrangement of marine high voltage systems and switchrooms
  • Operational and safety features of switchgear
  • Outline of the electrical testing of power plant
  • Introduction to the application of protection to high voltage switchgear and associated equipment
  • Marine power management systems (PMS)
  • Control and synchronising of AC generators (including AVRs)
  • Treatment of system neutral point
  • Basic fault level calculations
  • High voltage safety rules
  • Electrical safety documents
  • Key safe ad multi-hasp systems
  • Operational procedures
  • Switchgear maintenance

This course is specifically designed to meet the regulatory requirements of Tables A-III/1 (operational level) of the Annex to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended.

This course is ideally suited for Marine Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Vessel Superintendents and Surveyors.

What Certification Will I Receive from This Course?
