Delivered in Welwyn Garden City – Initial Assessment (5-days)
Accredited by LCL Awards
This 5-day CCN1 Initial Gas Safety Course & Appliances is for new entrants into the gas engineering profession or for operatives whose CCN1 qualification has lapsed by more than 12 months. Accredited by LCL Awards, the programme equips participants with core domestic gas safety and appliance competencies. You’ll be trained in CENWAT (central heating and water heaters) and CPA1 (combustion performance analysis). Delivered at our Welwyn Garden City centre, this initial assessment combines classroom theory and hands-on practical training to prepare you for safe, compliant domestic gas work.
Entry Requirements / Suitability
To enrol on the CCN1 Initial course, you must:
- Be a new entrant to the CCN1 qualification or have a previous CCN1 that expired more than 12 months ago.
- Have some foundational knowledge or experience in plumbing, heating, or similar trades (preferred but not always mandatory).
- Hold valid photographic ID (passport or driver’s licence).
- Be prepared to undertake both theory and practical assessments.
Certification
On successful completion, you will receive an LCL Awards certificate for Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) and for the appliance module(s) you take CENWAT & CPA1. This certificate is recognised by the Gas Safe Register and remains valid for five years.
Assessment
Assessment consists of:
- Multiple-choice / written theory exams, covering gas safety legislation, combustion, ventilation, appliance types, burners, emergency procedures, etc.
- Practical tests, including tasks such as tightness testing and purging (low/medium pressure), flame supervision, gas rate settings, flue performance, ventilation and controls.
- Appliance-specific tasks, for those modules included: installation, commissioning, maintenance, safety checks, and basic faultfinding.
Course Outline
Over five days, you will be trained and assessed on the following modules and topics:
CCN1 – Core Domestic Gas Safety, including:
• Gas safety regulations, relevant British Standards, legislation
• Combustion theory, gas rate, pressure & burner settings
• Gas pipework principles; material & sizing
• Tightness testing & direct purging (low and medium pressure)
• Ventilation and flueing; chimney recognition & testing
• Gas controls & safety devices
CENWAT – Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters: installation, servicing, commissioning of domestic boilers, water heaters
Basic Fault Finding & Safety Work Practices
What's Included
When you book this course at our Welwyn Garden City centre, you’ll receive:
All training, instruction, and assessment for the CCN1 core and applicable appliance modules.
- LCL Awards registration and certification costs.
- Use of tools, appliances, test equipment, and workshop facilities.

Undertake further appliance modules or specialisation (e.g., commercial, LPG, changeover) to expand your scope.
Course Details
During this five-day course, you will cover Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1), which includes gas safety legislation, relevant British Standards, combustion principles, burner pressures, gas pipework sizing, tightness testing and purging of low and medium-pressure systems, as well as ventilation and flueing requirements.
You’ll also gain experience with gas controls and safety devices to ensure compliance in real-world scenarios. Alongside CCN1, the course includes the CENWAT module on central heating boilers and water heaters, covering installation, servicing and commissioning.
Throughout the programme, you will also develop fault-finding techniques and learn safe working practices to prepare you for Gas Safe registration.
Depending on your chosen pathway, you may also complete CKR1 for cookers and HTR1 for space heaters, giving you practical skills in the installation, servicing and maintenance of these appliances. If you would like to add these extra modules, please speak to one of our training advisors who will be able to tailor your booking.
