Suitability

This solar training course is aimed at qualified electricians who would like to increase their skill set and knowledge to include installation of Solar Photovoltaic's. Candidates must have experience in testing to 17th edition (BS7671 standards).

Course Overview

The purpose of the course and assessment is to give candidates an entry level qualification in Solar photovoltaics. It is for experienced domestic and/or commercial electricians who want to extend their work scope and get into Solar Photovoltaic’s.

This training course will cover Solar Photovoltaic’s installations up to 5kWp output.

This Solar panel Installation training course covers the predominant systems (grid connected).

The course covers the following areas:

  • Background to the market and Grant and Funding routes (including MCS)
  • Regulations and Standards
  • Health & Safety considerations
  • AC & DC theory
  • Cell types and benefits
  • External and internal site survey requirements
  • Circuit design
  • System design and integration
  • Setting to work and commissioning
  • Servicing and fault finding

The course is not intended to cover roof access work in detail however the nature of the installation will require electrical connections on roofs, therefore the course includes legislative requirements and risk assessments for working at height. Wherever practicable we recommend the use of experienced roofers to install the arrays. Those who do the course should be comfortable and experienced with working at height.

Progression & Development

To progress your electrical career to include installation of Solar Panels.

Pre-requisites

You must be working as an electrician and have good electrical experience in the design and installation of domestic single phase circuits and issuing appropriate documentation. You must also hold a relevant qualification and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the 17th Edition wiring regulations and the building regulations. It is also beneficial to have a NVQ level 3 or a full scope Part P qualification with experience, although those without the qualification but sufficient experience can be considered.

Assessment

The course will be assessed by a multiple choice examination paper along with a practical assessment.

Certification

On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of competence in Solar Photovoltaic Installation.

Requirements & Essential Reading

It is essential that the candidates will be experienced in the design and installation of domestic single phase circuits and issuing the appropriate documentation (electrical).

Why Solar Photovoltaic Installation

With the price of fuel rapidly increasing and CO2 levels rising, today’s energy supply is becoming even more critical. However there is one new technology that is sure to make a real positive impact within the UK energy market.

Solar Photovoltaics, or Solar PV, is fast becoming a way to reduce carbon emissions. This is a natural progression of the electrical market and is something that all electrical engineers and installers should consider as a service to offer clients.

Funding is available via the Low carbon Building Programme and the Cert scheme. Information about Solar Photovoltaics can be viewed on the STA website.

Check out our new Solar Photovoltaics Installers course for information on how to get qualified.
