The City and Guilds Certificate in the Building Regulations is a one day course suitable for electricians who are working in the domestic electrical industry. It is most suited to those who have had several years experience working within the industry.
This qualification is widely recognized by the 5 main competent person’s schemes run throughout England and Wales (NAPIT, NICEIC, Gas Safe, ELECSA, BSI). Those who successfully complete this course will be able to apply to their preferred scheme for accreditation.
This course covers the general requirements of the Building Regulations in relation to electrical installations to dwellings. You will cover;
1. Scope, Purpose and Structure of the Building Regulations
2. Understand notifiable and non-notifiable types of building work
3. Identify relevant approved documents
4. Indentify the role of Building Control Services.
The course will help you with the Methods of Compliance for the 7 Parts of the Building Regulations that are most relevant to electrical installations in dwellings.
Candidates who successfully pass the ‘City & Guilds Building Regulations for Electricians’ will be well positioned to continue onto the following City and Guilds qualifications:
• City & Guilds 2391-10 Level 3 Certificate in Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical installations
• City & Guilds 2392-10 Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification
• City & Guilds 2382-10 Level 3 Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671 June 2008) 17th Edition
You can also apply to one of the competent person schemes running thought the England and Wales.Please note as this course does not cover Scotland as there are different building regulations to England and Wales.
The course is most suited to those with electrical knowledge or training, or who have passed previous electrician courses.
You should be familiar with installations in the domestic electrical sector and should be working in this environment. Ideally you will hold a City and Guilds 2360 Part 1, or a City & Guilds 2330 level 2 or equivalent qualification.
You will be expected to have a working knowledge of the following:-
• Electrical Safety Legislation, Regulations, Standards and Terminology
• Domestic Electrical Circuit Installation
• Installing Domestic Lighting Circuits
• Domestic Electrical Earthing and Bonding Requirements
• Inspecting, Testing and Commissioning Single Phase Domestic Electrical Circuits
• Special Locations and Installations Including Kitchens
• Domestic Electrical Installation Pre-Work Survey / Inspection
• Basic Understanding of 3 Phase
If not you may be better suited to the Part P 5 day course which covers all the above.
Previous knowledge of the IEE 17th Edition Wiring Regulations is not assumed, but a fundamental knowledge of electrical principles is expected. For this reason, the City & Guilds 2382 is recommended.
There is a 17th Edition Update Course available for those who have completed a 16th Edition course after June 2001. This is called the City and Guilds 17th Edition - 2382-20 Wiring Regulations Update Course and is only 1.5 days.

Assessment
The City and Guilds 2393-10 Building Regulations for Electricians Course will be assessed by an open-book, 20-question, multiple choice online examination.The examination will take place in the afternoon of the electrical training course, using a PC.
Successful candidates will achieve a ‘City & Guilds 2393-10 Building Regulations for Electrical Installations’ in domestic dwellings certificate and a certificate of attendance from PASS.
Candidates who fail the examination will only receive a certificate of attendance from PASS.
Candidates are required to read and bring with them:-
• Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations (ISBN 978-0-8634-862-4)
It would also be an advantage to have a copy of:-
• Electrical Installers Guide to the Building Regulations.(ISBN 978-0-954879105).
