The 17th Edition Amendment that was published in June 2011 will come into force from January 2012.
Those who currently have a 17th Edition qualification will need to complete training to ensure that they are up to date with the new standards.
The new course is the 2382-12 and after January will be the new course standard for 17th Edition.
However, you can still complete the current 2382-10 17th Edition course up until the end of 2011.
It should be noted that the new course does not offer an ‘update’ version due to the number of changes in the book, but PASS will be offering a training option for 2382-10 17th Edition qualified people which is shorter and offers the updated elements.
Candidates will then be able to complete the examination for the 2382-12 course.
There are a number of changes to the 17th Edition which will come into force from January 2012. Here is a quick guide to give you an idea of what to expect.
Any equipment such as; lifts, transformers and fluorescent lighting can cause electromagnetic disturbances and this interference can damage IT equipment, components and circuits. This new section suggests recommendations to avoid and reduce electromagnetic disturbances.
Transient voltages can have a peak value of 6kV. Lightning strike and electrical switching can give transient overvoltages to installations. This new section requires the installation of SPDs to limit transient overvoltages and divert surge current away from sensitive equipment.
Strict measures are needed to ensure the safety of medical patients especially where they are likely to be subjected to the application of medical electrical equipment.
Regulation 15 of the Electricity at Work Act requires working space, access and lighting to be correctly and adequately provided where work is being carried out. This new section includes requirements for gangway width, access, emergency access and emergency evacuation.
Periodic inspection and testing is required because electrical installations can deteriorate over time. As legislation states that electrical installations should be maintained, periodic inspection and testing of installations is required.
